This weeks Book meme on Booking through Thursday asks a few questions:
What was the last book you bought?
I actually just re-bought 1984, since once upon a time I lent out my copy and never got it back. :(
Name a book you have read MORE than once
I have read several books more than once. Hmmm.. Dubliners by James Joyce, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1984 by George Orwell, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, All of the Harry Potters, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit, etc etc
Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.
How do you choose a book? eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews
A bit of all of the above. I have a strange relationship with books. It's a bit like they choose me, not the other way around.
Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Fiction, always.
What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?
Both are important.
Most loved/memorable character (character/book)
I really love the characters from Great Expectations. I just think they are so vulnerable and real. John the Savage, from Brave New World, is another favorite. It was through reading about his struggle that I began asking a lot of unexpected questions. Brave New World also heavily influenced my current writing project.
Which book or books can be found on your nightstand at the moment?
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, You Have to Kiss A lot of Frogs by Laurie Graff and The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
What was the last book you’ve read, and when was it?
Ivy by Julie Hearn and I finished it the day before yesterday.
Have you ever given up on a book half way in?
Yes. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. I just cannot get through it, no matter how hard I try.
It's like we've got some psychic book connection... 1984, Brave New World... or it could just be a shared love of dystopic literature.
I'm such a sucker for Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm.

I've taught 1984, and you gave me reason to smile!

It seems we do, Heather! It's kind of awesome. :)
I also love Animal Farm, but not a fan of Lord of the Flies.
The Great Gatsby?

I loved Brave New World. I think I was the only one in my high school English class who wasn't just disturbed by it.

I love it too, especially the end scene as he swings like a two compass needles. It's just such an amazing metaphor!
